The Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, or PURPA, was passed in 1978 in order to reduce dependency on foreign energy sources and to promote a market for alternative energy generation. One result of the passing of PURPA was requiring more usage of power produced by alternative means, including cogeneration. Power utilities in some states are required to purchase this alternative electricity if cost is not higher than their own methods. The PER KENTEC system's power generation system falls under the standards set forth by PURPA and qualifies for all benefits the act provides to operators of alternative energy production plant operators.
